(Nashville, TN) -- A new proposal in Tennessee to loosen regulations on African-style hair braiding is heading to Governor Bill Lee's desk for his signature. Legislatures advanced the Hair Braiding Freedom Act yesterday which would exempt braiders from getting a natural hairstyling license but not from registering with the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance. Current Tennessee law says hair braiders must complete 300 hours of natural hair styling at a cosmetology school. Supporters of the measure say it is a job-creating bill because ending the strict rules would allow thousands of people to earn a living braiding hair.
