Social Media Influencer Jailed in Egypt for Belly Dancing

Belly dancer Sama el-Masry is a high-profile social media personality in Egypt. She was sentenced to three years in prison, and was fined approximately $18,500 in Egyptian currency for "inciting misery and immorality" with her social media postings. El-Masry was arrested in April during an investigation into videos and photos on social media, including the popular video-sharing platform TikTok, which the public prosecutor's office described as sexually explicit. The Cairo Economic Court said on Saturday that her posts violated family principles and values in Egypt, and that she has created and managed sites and accounts on social media for the purpose of "immorality."
