AAA: Tips to Stay Safe This Halloween and Avoid Tricksters

AAA is offering several tips ahead of Halloween. Halloween is Saturday and it will look completely different due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Halloween is full of treats but it is also full of tricks.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations reports Halloween is usually one of the top three days for pedestrian injuries and fatalities.

AAA: Tips to stay safe this Halloween:

  • Prepare for Pranksters
  • On Halloween, your vehicle is twice as likely to get vandalized. AAA suggests parking it in a garage and making sure to lock your car and keep all windows rolled up. If you do not have a garage then park it in a well-lit area.
  • Look out for black cats, blind spots, and Batman
  • During the nights, thousands of trick-or-treaters will be out on the streets. Make sure to slow down and turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children and so they can see you. If children do not see you make sure to honk your horn.
  • Light up the night
  • Keeping lights on during the night will help trick-or-treaters or guests see when walking to your home. Lighting also keeps vandals away.
  • Beware the brew
  • Serve non-alcoholic drinks as well as food. If you do serve alcohol make sure to stop at least an hour before all gathering ends.

This year, COVID-19 is changing up some Halloween traditions. The CDC is also offering ways to stay safe while celebrating. Children and parents should be extra vigilant to ensure everyone stays healthy for the holiday, according to the CDC.

Here are some tips on how to make trick-or-treating safer:

  • Wear a mask. A costume mask is not a substitute for a medical or cloth mask and do not wear both because it can make it hard to breathe.
  • Avoid direct contact with trick-or-treaters
  • Give out treats outdoors
  • Have treats individually bagged set at a station for kids to take
  • Wash hands before eating your treats
  • Stay at least six feet away from people who do not live with you
