Pearland nursing home outbreak; Harris County gets 'F' in social distancing

Here is the latest on the COVID-19 outbreak in the Greater Houston area:

There is an outbreak at a nursing home in Pearland. The Windsong Care Center has 59 residents and 17 staff members that are positive for COVID-19. Governor Greg Abbott told our TV partner Channel 2 this is why a disinfecting team from the the National Guard will be deployed.

"The National Guard is going in there. They will be able to eliminate any COVID-19 germs that may be in there to make sure that it will be a safe place for the residents to live," Abbott said. You can watch the rest of the interview below.

Abbott Also says that over the next two weeks all residents and staff at nursing homes across the state of Texas will be tested for the virus.

The grade is based on percent change in average distance traveled, percent change in non-essential visitation and decrease in human encounters. Harris County received an failing grades for non-essential visits and decrease in encounters density.
  • The Harris County Commissioners Court doubled the size of a COVID-19 relief fund to help the most vulnerable residents with housing, utilities, food and health care to 30 million dollars.
  • The Fort Bend County’s Commissioners Court approved a COVID-19 Strike Team to address hot spots like nursing homes.
  • The Greater Houston area reported 5 new deaths for a total of 387
  • The state reported 36 new deaths yesterday for a total 1,388.
  • The Gulf Coast Blood Center is asking for donations and says they have less than a one day supply to meet the needs of local hospitals.
  • The Astros say under their COVID-19 Postponement Policy fans can use their 2020 tickets for the 2021 season or get refunds.
  • Texas A&M athletes can return to campus June 1st.
  • The UIL will allow limited summer strength and conditioning June 8th.
