21-Year-Old Served 10 Days In Jail After Failing To Report To Jury Duty

A Florida man was sentenced to 10 days in jail after he overslept for jury duty. 21-year-old Deandre Somerville explained to Judge John Kastrenakis that he did not understand the seriousness of the situation when faced with the issue in court. Even though Somerville had no criminal record whatsoever, he was sentenced to 10 days in jail, 150 hours of community service, a written apology of at least 100 words, and a year of probation and $233 in fees.

"Before my hearing, I walked into the courtroom a free man with no criminal record," Somerville said in court on Friday. "I left a criminal in handcuffs." As a result, he's now faced with a misdemeanor on his record which could affect potential employment opportunities.

After sparking much well deserved outrage on social media, Judge Kastrenakis reduced his probation from a year to three months and his community service from 150 hours to 30. This does not change the fact that he still served 10 days in jail for the offense. Seems a bit harsh in my opinion...
